I just want to really quickly tell you the story of a patient. The child is 5 years old and turned up at the government hospital last week. He has severe cerebral palsy and is unable to talk or walk but is the happiest child. Normally, as per the doctors instructions this patient would be given a few stretches and sent home. However, I looked at this patient and thought that he could have so much more, I referred him to our mission rehabilitation hospital.
He came to the hospital yesterday and I had so much fun playing ball with this wonderfully happy child. We measured him up for a wheelchair and suggested that he actually stay and have rehabilitation. However, the OT's looked at the patient and suggested referral to a CP centre we physios thought had closed (it has moved). Here the patient can get a basic education, physio and OT treatment and ongoing followup.
Hopefully the child is accepted and the outcome is so much better than a few exercises taught by physios at a government hospital who don't have time to give more input.
